Beatriz & Santos

Teen pregnancy is often portrayed as failure and misfortune, particularly in challenged socio-economic environments. However, this view is one-dimensional. Beatriz and Santos’ story shows the power of kinship, love, reverence for elders, and culture and traditions as the underpinnings of a new family that help mitigate the challenges faced by a young mother and smooth out the transition of teen to mother, mother to grandmother, and young man to father. Through a matriarchal society, Beatriz learns from her mother the traditions, patterns and rhythms of motherhood to establish her own foundation of love, family, and stability.
